The Stories Behind the Headstones Project started very personally. My husband’s ancestors are buried in the graveyard and his Aunt Vera took me to see the grave and to explain the family history. She hadn’t been well and it had been some time since she’d visited. Despite knowing exactly where the grave was, and it being right by the path, she struggled to find it. Nature had done its best to reclaim the space and it was covered with overgrown grass, stinging nettles and brambles. I watched the tears come to her eyes and at that moment I decided that something needed to be done. The first step was our own family grave.
