An accident resulting in serious injuries to Mr. Puckett, a butler in the service of Lord Newport, of Castle Bromwich Hall, occurred at New Street Station, on Saturday afternoon, 27th August 1887. Puckett, who arrived at the station with Lord Newport in good time, stood on the No. 4 platform waiting for the Midland train to Castle Bromwich to start. The carriages were moved forward a little way, and Puckett, in the belief that the train was about to start, made an attempt to enter one of the compartments. His foot slipped, and he fell between the carriage and the platform., one of the wheels passing over his leg. Lord Newport, who had taken his seat, left the train and accompanied his butler to the general hospital, where he was detained. Later in the day, the injured limb was amputated. His lordship visited the hospital again on the Monday to make enquiries about Puckett’s condition. He was then in a critical state.
