Childhood
Sidney SamuelWinkley was the son of Thomas William Winkley and Catherine Sophia Jinks. He was born on 7th January 1890 and baptised on the 29th of the same month at Ashted, St James the Less Warwickshire.
Family Life
Sidney spent his childhood in Duddeston, now considered to be part of Nechells. His father was employed as an Iron and Steel Stamper, whilst his mother performed domestic duties. After leaving school Sidney started working as a Wine and Spirit Belleman. An occupation he was still employed as, when at the age of twenty he married Beatrice Oakley on 10th September 1910. His first child, Evelyn Beatrice, was born shortly after on 17th March 1911. She was one of nine known children who were born to the couple over a period of twenty-two years.
WW1
During WW1 Sidney served as a Private in the Royal Army Service Corps. and received both the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
Post War
After the war Sidney returned to family life and the electoral registers show that the family had moved to Alum Rock Road and that Sidney had earned promotion and was a Supervisor in a Brewer’s Wine and Spirit Department. The family were later to move again to Ashville Road Castle Bromwich and it was here that Sidney was living when he died at the age of 76 in East Birmingham Hospital on 2nd July 1966.
Burial
Sidney is buried in a family grave in Castle Bromwich. The grave bears testament to the lives of Sidney, his wife and two of their sons. The inscription reads:
